FOCUS ON CAREERS IN EUROPEAN AFFAIRS

Whether they work in European institutions, consultancies, lobbying, think-tanks or specialized media, Sciences Po graduates work in a wide range of expertises in European Affairs.

SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

Johannes Jaenicke, Policy Advisor to MEP Damian Boeselager at the European Parliament

"The European Studies track was a very useful tool for my day to day job. Especially the courses I took on European economic policy were really useful in preparing the work on the EU Recovery Fund. Also PSIA teaches you to write on any given issue in a very short time, so that it at least seems to others like you know what you are talking about, even though you absolutely do not. This is a very helpful skill in politics!"

Katarina Vehovar,  Schuman trainee at the European Parliament's Liaison Office in Ljubljana

"Learning to craft better policy briefings under the tutelage of course convenors who have such rich backgrounds in academia and government alike has proven to be a great asset not just during my subsequent studies of policymaking in Russia at King’s College London, but also during my traineeship at the European Parliament. For this reason, I wholeheartedly agree with many other students (past and present) who emphasise that PSIA offers an unparalleled springboard for a career in policy consultancy."

Giacomo Spinola, EU Policy Advisor at Edison SpA in Brussels

"PSIA's international environment gave me the opportunity to work with people with different cultural, academic, and professional backgrounds. I found that was the most enriching experience of all and today, as I work in an international environment, I am making treasure of what I learned from interacting within the PSIA community."

Lauranne de Lathauwer, Political Attaché at the EU Delegation to Barbados

"The most fascinating aspect of my role is its variety, as each day is vastly different. The most surprising aspect is the impact the EU has in the region through its many projects and programmes. EU support on the ground here, especially in countries recovering from natural disasters, is invaluable. To witness that impact up close is inspiring.(...) I use what I learned at Sciences Po daily, from drafting reports to understanding geopolitical tensions to thinking critically and forming my own opinions. The knowledge I gained at PSIA gives me practical tools to use in my role, both in terms of theoretical knowledge and acquired skills."

Vanika Sharma, Junior Economist at the European Centre for International Political Economy in Brussels, Belgium.

Ole Spillner, International Security, Franco-German University Best Master Thesis award

"I am currently employed at the German Council for Foreign Relations (DGAP) – the leading foreign policy think tank in Germany. We analyze all kinds of foreign policy issues, publicly comment on day-to-day foreign politics and based on our research advise politicians and governments on these issues.  More concretely, I am working as researcher in the Director’s office coordinating the director's research, supporting him in the writing process and even co-authoring research papers and opinion pieces on various foreign policy issues."

Jayasurya Kalakkal, an Environment and Trade Consultant at the UN Environment Program in Geneva, Switzerland.

I have a variety of responsibilities like working on research based papers/outputs on topics related to trade, environment, sustainable agriculture etc. , participating in outreach events to disseminate the work of UNEP,  providing UNEP's inputs in relevant meetings of the World Trade Organisation, supporting the strategic direction of projects that I work on, contributing to analytical work on how trade policy can support environmental sustainability in key "high-impact" economic sectors etc. As per needs, I also provide support to project management and administration - such as on budgets, recruitments for the trade team.."

Iliana Flores, Consultant for IOM’s Migrant Protection Division in Geneva, Switzerland

"After I graduated from PSIA, I started applying to different positions. Some months and several interviews later, in October 2021, I got accepted for an internship at the IOM in the same team in which I work now. I would say that I secured my position by fulfilling my tasks, having a good relationship with my team and always showing curiosity to learn more. ."

Asgerdur Asgeirsdottir, Director of Communications and Startegy at the Arctic Circle in Reykjavik, Iceland.

"The best part of my job is the team – we are always ready to help one another and work well together under pressure, we are honest about our capacity and not afraid to share ideas.
I have the opportunity to go to remote places in the Arctic; last trip was to Tromsø in Norway and next stop is Nuuk in Greenland! It can be challenging to walk into a room full of public officials, CEOs and entrepreneurs and present to them our work and negotiate a fundraising, but it surprised me how quickly your comfort zone expands and with experience and practice it all becomes easier."

Kanak Gokarn, Junior officer in the Sustainable Energy team at the ICLEI World Secretariat in Bonn

ICLEI had always been on my radar but I have to be honest, it was a straightforward process. I applied to the posting online and was later called for an interview and finally given a written assignment. I think my profile, including my previous academic and professional background and my academic experience from PSIA, aligned very well with the role, which needed a broad understanding of the energy sector and technologies, as well as the international climate governance space. Some of my hobbies, including graphic design, helped too!
