Daniel E. Rak (Israel) 2nd year student in International Security Intern Analyst Eurasia Group – NYC, USA

Daniel E. Rak

What are your role and main responsibilities?

My work with EG encompasses a horizontal, qualitative geopolitical analysis approach concentrating on global strategic sectors and financial & professional services. This multilayered experience is increasing my resilience and flexibility skills in an era where a solid base of knowledge is a necessity. Currently I am examining the impact of COVID-19 on the technological sector; Reporting on Israeli politics, Israel-Iran tensions, U.S-China Decoupling; COVID-19 country-level policies; Cyber Security and Cyber Threats and macro risk assessments to the financial sector. Altogether my current practice is indispensable for my next challenges. In addition, this experience gave me the skills to co-create the Sciences Po Association for Political Risk Analysis.

How did you secure this role?

Due to COVID-19 I was skeptical that I would secure a position in the climax of the first wave. However, my hutzpah fortunately prevailed. I secured my internship position during the final months of the Spring Semester, making good use of the Parisian COVID confinement to actively search for opportunities online, mainly in the Risk and BI sectors.

What is the most fascinating and/or surprising aspect of your role?

The ongoing COVID-19 crisis created an unprecedented global disruption, accelerating processes in our personal, professional, and political climates. To students at PSIA, as young professionals devoted to international policy practice, it also created endless opportunities. Working with the New York Headquarters of the leading political risk firm was nearly impossible for me to fulfill if not for the transition to digital and  distant teleworking. Thus, although we are limited in our physical mobility – we are exposed to an abundance of possibilities worldwide.

How did your PSIA experience help you with the role?

My academic experience in PSIA, specifically the short-deadline presentations and assignments that were conducted physically and unintentionally through Zoom provided a powerful remote working ethic, put in good use during my work with EG and future career paths.

What advice would you give to others?

Be active in your career building, do not compromise and stay optimistic. Stay focused on your goal and do not let any personal, environmental, or political situation affect your confidence in your ability to get where you want to be and do what you want to do. A crisis is also an opportunity!
