Latin America

The South and Central American area is very diversified. It is not possible to make general statements especially with regard to the internships and the first employees offered in this region given the huge amount of countries that fall under this definition. In general, in the area interesting opportunities are available, in particular through the French Chambre de Commerce, the European and Western companies with seats in these countries and the several NGOs active there. When looking for an internship or a first job in this region, it is necessary to keep in mind that not all the countries offer good opportunities and that in some cases the bureaucratic procedures linked to the visa can represent a real obstacle.

Argentina

Argentina offers a good quality of life and interesting opportunities for those who are ready to focus on specific sectors in which the country lacks the required knowledge or experience. In order to do an internship or to work there, it is necessary to speak Spanish.
The most interesting opportunities are concentrated in the sectors of finance, tourism, agro industrial firms, exports, NGOs.
France and Argentina have signed an agreement to favour the international mobility of young professionals between the two countries which can be a great opportunity for Sciences Po students. In addition, it is possible to obtain a Holiday Working Visa (PVT in French) to spend a year maximum in the country with the possibility to work there.
There are no particular difficulties to get a visa.

Sciences Po Alumni's network

Sciences Po Alumni’s network in the country is a quite vast one with 41 Alumni working there. To have access to the list of the names, please check the following link:

Brasil

Brasil offers less interesting opportunities in comparison with other Latin American countries such as Chile, Costa Rica or Peru. Although the country has experienced a rapid economic growth in the last decades, it is suffering important social problems linked especially to the high level of inequality. The key sector of its economy are represented by the agriculture, the industrial sector, the energy one and the tourism. The most interesting opportunities are concentrated in those fields and in the IT, finance, consulting and communication.
The possibilities to find a job without speaking Portuguese and without having previous professional experiences are few. Those who have already lived in the country or worked there have more opportunities, especially because getting a visa is difficult. To obtain a working visa is often required to already have a job in the country before accessing it. The procedure can last up to 6 months and is often difficult to obtain it because the labour market is oriented towards the protection of local workers which means that the company who is hiring you has to demonstrate your added value.

The Sciences Po Alumni’s network in the country is really interesting with more than 100 former Sciences Po students working in Brazil. To have access to the list, please check the following link:

To work in the country it is necessary to be able to speak fluently English and Spanish and to have a specialist profile given that the local  population is already well prepared and qualified.
To work in the country or to do there a paid internship it is necessary to own a temporary visa or a working visa. Both of them are not difficult to obtain for French citizens.

Colombia

Colombia is a country affected by several social problems linked to the high level of poverty, the narcotraffic and the violence but has had a very positive economic performance during the recent years. The labour market lacks qualified people to be employed in the: energy sector (exploitation of all natural resources available in the country), tourism, banking system, finance and cosmetic industry.
Obtaining a working visa in the country is not difficult and it lasts for two years.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica offers an economical and political environment very favourable to work there or do an internship. As in the case of other Latin American countries, even in Costa Rica several Western industries own seats, especially those related to the IT sector, such as Amazon or HP. The most interesting job opportunities are in the field of the communication, IT, tourism, consulting and finance.
To work in the country is required a good knowledge of English and Spanish. For those who cannot speak fluent Spanish, the best idea is to look for an internship or a job in American or European companies active in the country. The labour market tries to favour local workers which means that in order to get a job, it is necessary to concentrate on one’s experiences and background.
Any job carried out in Costa Rica requires a residency permit and a local health insurance which can be obtained with the help of the employer or a lawyer.

In the recent years, the country has experienced important political changes that have affected even the economy of it. Important projects have been carried out by the government in order to favour the development of the country. In this particular historical conjuncture, the country lacks the required knowledge and a qualified working force.
The key sectors of the national economy are: the oil firm, the exports (especially of agricultural products), the tourism and the education.

Mexico

Mexico is a country within which a very open economy coexists with several social and security problems. The internal job market offers opportunity to foreigners in several sectors: telecommunications, finance, environment, tourism, industries, luxury sector and fashion. Those speaking fluently Spanish and having previous professional experiences have an advantage and more probabilities to get a job.
Furthermore, several European and French firms own seats in the country and offer internships and jobs.
It is not difficult to get a visa and three different types of visa are offered according to the activity carried out in the country.

Paraguay

The country is living a developing phase but its economy is still highly reliant on the agricultural sector. One of the most important problems within it is the high level of inequality within the population which leads even to remarkable differences in the life style between rich people and poor one. Given the economic situation of the country, it does not offer so many opportunities for foreigners, especially because the tertiary sector is largely undeveloped and the industrial one too. The best opportunity to work in the country is to try to be hired by foreign companies with seats within its territory because the local market does not offer that many alternatives.
There are no particular difficulties in obtaining a visa to work in the country.

Few Sciences Po Alumni work in the country. To have access to the list of their names, please click on the following link:

Peru

Peru is a country whose economy is mostly based on its natural resources and their exploitation. For this reason most of the job opportunities offered within the country are usually related to the hydrocarbon sector. Besides, even the agroindustrial sector, the tourism and the NGOs are very developed in the country and offer interesting opportunities. Since 2013, Peru has signed a trade agreement with the European Union and starting from this event, the commercial relationship has rapidly increased. Several French companies are active in the country and offer internships and jobs to foreigners. The best thing to do is to surf the Chambre de Commerce web page and look for offers.
Getting a visa in Peru is not difficult and two main categories of visa exist: the temporary one and the resident permit. The first one allows those owning it to do a non-paid internship while the second one allows to work for two years in the country and is renewable.
